The family story is that she was very sickly when she was born, and they thought she would die soon, so they wanted to have her baptized. The priest didn't like the middle name they had picked out, and they didn't want to wait to think of another name. (The middle name might have been Ruth)

Formerly of Hastings and St. Lawrence, Pa.Pauline G. Pringle, 88, of Greensburg, formerly of Hastings and St. Lawrence, died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2007, at St. Anne Home, Greensburg. She was born April 13, 1919, in Hastings to the late William and Della (Leiden) Gill and also was predeceased by her husband, William C. Pringle, in 1997; infant sister, Mary Elizabeth, and sister, Mary Elizabeth Gill. Pauline was a member of Cathedral Parish Catholic Church, Greensburg; an active volunteer in the Greensburg community, where she was instrumental in starting the Greensburg Community Federal Credit Union, and involved with the Girl Scouts. Surviving are children William R. (Linda) Pringle, of Woodlynn, Thomas H. (Dina) Pringler, of Las Vegas, Nev., and Kathleen C. (Michael) Davy, of Gaithersburg, Md.; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; brothers William R. Gill, of Auburn, Ala., and Robert F. Gill, of Maryland, and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at STEVENS FUNERAL HOME INC., 1004 N. Fifth Ave., Patton, which will be the site of a vigil for the deceased. Benedictine fathers will celebrate funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Monday in Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Patton. Committal in St. Lawrence Cemetery. William Gill, aged 33 years, a former well known young man of this place, was instantly killed about 10 o’clock last Thursday night when he was walking on the main line of the R.R.R. and was hit by a fast express train near McDonald, PA.
Mr. Gill had been in Pittsburgh and had boarded the 9:15 train out of that city for his home in McDonald. He went to sleep on the train and did not awaken until two stations past his destination, a distance of about a mile. He left the train and started back to McDonald on foot, walking on the railroad. While on his way he was struck by a fast express train and instantly killed.
Deceased had conducted a barber shop here until a year ago, when he sold out and went to McDonald where he purchased and conducted a barber shop.
Beside his wife he is survived by three children, Mary, Pauline and William; his mother Mrs. Helen Gill, and four brothers, _________(unreadable) Gill, Peter is Gill and Albert Gill, all of this place. The remains were shipped to Patton Saturday evening and were taken to the home of his wife’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leiden in St. Lawrence. The funeral was held at 10 o’clock Monday morning from the St. Lawrence Catholic Church with interment in the church cemetery.

According to Leo Leiden's book, Gill was originally Gillou. According to Rosann Gill, it was always Gill. However, there was another Gill family in the area that was originally Gillou.
According to Rosann Gill, Frank Gill was born in Ireland (or Brittany).
According to Death Certificate for William Gill (Frank's son) Frank was born in France.
According to Family History book by Patricia Burchfield, Frank was a miner.
In a later version, Burchfield's book claims that Frank's name was Francis Peter and he died on 17 Apr 1949 and buried in St. Bernard Cemetery, Hastings, Cambria County, Pa. This is highly doubtful, since Helen is listed as a widow in several census records as well as her obituary.

Francis Peter Gill died on 5/17-18/1895, this is what was stated on Helen's
marriage license to Peter Offret. I have seen where someone stated that she
was only married to Peter Offret for 3 years but I have no idea if this was
the case. I wonder what became of Peter Offret, if he died, or if they were
divorced? I have a feeling that the marriage was possibly annulled. My
reason for this is that Helen was catholic and was buried catholic and is
buried at St. Bernard Cemetery in Hastings. She and Peter Offret were
married at the County Courthouse in Evensburg on 6/28/1897. Had she stayed
married to Peter then I doubt very much that she would have been able to
have a catholic burial.

A DOUBLE TRAGEDY.
One of the most sensational tragedies in the history of northern Cambria, occurred in this place about 9 o'clock last Saturday evening, when John Gill, a well known young man of this place, shot and killed Ross Roberts, a well known Italian, who was accompanying Miss Mae Nagle to her house, who Gill tried to kill, but Roberts stepped in front of the girl and received the shot instead. Gill ran to the edge of town where he fired a bullet into his own brain.
Miss Nagle was spending the night at the Roberts' home, when Gill called [came to the house] and told her that her mother was ill and that her presence was required at home. According to Miss Nagle, Gill was infatuated with her and she had from the first spurned his attentions. Gill had on different occasions threatened her and she was afraid to return to her home with him or alone. She asked Roberts to accompany her, which he did. When they were within a short distance of the girl's home, Gill rushed from the shadows. He had a revolver in his hand and raised it as he neared them. Roberts placed himself in front of the girl and commanded him to stop. But he did not and fired as he ran forward. Roberts fell to the ground shot through the chest, and he died instantly. The girl turned and ran and Gill pursued her, catching her near the Hastings House [on Fourth Avenue.] He pointed the revolver at her and pulled the trigger, but the weapon refused to explode and her screams soon brought others to the scene. When Gill saw he was balked he fled down the railroad tracks. A shot time later a shot was heard, but the town was in a fever of excitement and but little attention was paid to it.
At the inquest conducted by Deputy Coroner Dunsmore, of Barnesboro, Miss Nagle testified that Gill had threatened her , and on Memorial Day he said, "I'll get you, Mae, if I have to go to the gallows for it." This was at a dance in the Grove on that day when Miss Nagle danced several times with a fellow Gill did not like, and he warned her she must have nothing to do with the man he deemed his rival. The girl did not heed him and refused to dance with him, and then he made the above remark.
Gill's body was found about 10:30 o'clock near the tipple of No. 20 mine of the Pennsylvania Coal & Coke corporation. He had shot himself in the right temple and held a note in his left hand upon which was scrawled, "I die for the love of Mae Nagle."
Both Roberts and Gill were well known here and had a large circle of friends. Gill was aged 26 years and was an industrious young man. He was secretary of the Loyal Order of Moose, a member of the Hastings Fire Company and check weight man at No. 20 mine of the Pennsylvania Coal & Coke corporation. He is survived by his mother [Helen Joncour Gill] and five brothers, as follows: Frank, Peter, Louis, William and Albert, all of this place. His funeral was held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon.
Mr. Roberts was aged about 50 years and was one of our best Italian citizens. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, U.M.W. of A., and Society Operaia Italiana di Mute Soccorsco Umberto I, an Italian society of this place. He is survived by his wife and these children: Mrs. Louis Traves, of this place; Don and Fred, of Youngstown, O., and Angela, at home. His funeral was held at 9 o'clock Wednesday morning with services in St. Bernard's Catholic church. Interment was made in the church Cemetery.
The local branch of the U.M.W. of A. and the Loyal Order of Moose attended both funerals.
Note: Mae Nagle was Emma "Mae" Nagle, only child of Elmer Nagle and Margaret "Maggie"
Gessler. [Elmer was the son of Michael Nagle and Lavinia Helfrich, the 1st wife. He ran a hotel, as did Elmer, who rented the Grove Hotel.]
Maggie and Elmer were in 1904 and Maggie married my g-uncle, Edward Kline. The Klines lived on Fourth Avenue, not far from the Hastings House Hotel mentioned. It was also the street on which the RR Station was located. Mae later married Walter Rhoa of Chest Springs.
Mr. Ross's daughter, Angela, had musical evenings. There were other young people at the house along with Mae. Mr. Ross was a fan of Opera and a musician.
For whatever reason, Mr. Ross's name was not included in the Church Records as having been buried in St. Bernard’s.
Mr. Gill was a checkweightman. A mine had two checkweightmen, one hired by the company, and one elected by the U.M.W. of A. as a check on the company's man. They counted the number of cars of coal each miner produced each day.
Mr. Gill could not have a Catholic funeral because he was a suicide. [He was the son of Frank and Helen (Joncour) Gill. John could not be buried in the "consecrated" part of the St. Bernard's Cemetery, and was buried in the part called "Potter's Field." Suicides, unbaptized babies, public sinners and Catholics who did not attend Mass were buried there. Potter's Field was a circle of single graves around the edge of the cemetery.
"The Grove" was a recreational and picnic area in the East End of Hastings, along the RR tracks across from Strittmatter's Lumber Company. It had a dance hall building and the Grove Hotel was located there. Church picnics and public dances where held there. Baker's Oil Company bought the dance hall and established a gas station there. The Grove Hotel building is still there, now the R.H. Kelly Memorial Company.
